After the Kickstarter didn't hit its goal in December, we had to go back to the drawing board to get DirtBags in to peoples hands.
Trail running and the outdoor industry needs this choice more than ever to reduce our plastic waste and impact on the planet.
So, we're doing things a little different at For The Trail and are now going ahead with the next phase to launch DirtBags.
Four seasonal drops per year, spring, summer, autumn, winter.
The very first spring drop goes live next week at https://shop.forthetrail.com and you can help support our first every batch and bring DirtBags to life!!
Spring drop timeline and how this will work:
- Pre-orders open next week through to the end of Winter
- Manufacturing starts mid to late winter
- Delivery: Early spring
- Next drop: Summer Solstice
We will keep you up to date at every step as the pre-order progresses!
Why seasonal drops?
The summary is that we want to question every process, system and action in a business model that actually asks less of the planet at every step. We wanted to produce alternatives that ask less of the planet than current options.
That is just the very first step and is the backbone to what we want to do with For The Trail.
Create products that ask less of the planet than current options and then continue to take that approach in to the rest of the business.
Which means trying to sell differently too, and we believe quarterly drops aligned with the seasons is a step in the right direction.
The tangible reasons behind this idea;
- Batch manufacturing uses less energy in their production.
- Zero warehousing to hold stock eliminates some supply chain emissions and energy requirements. We don't have to light or heat extra rooms or buildings just for stock.
- Made-to-order means zero overproduction waste. Did you know that a large percentage of outdoor gear is unsold and goes to waste, whilst never being used!
- Hopefully better relationships with the products and you make them last longer.
- Fewer deliveries to us (just four a year).
- Whilst also sending out the packages to buyers in large batches, which further reduces delivery emissions.

Yes, you will have to wait, potentially weeks for the product, but this is what it takes to build this right.
